INFORMATION

John Leslie Campbell enlisted with the 6th Reinforcements, 33rd Battalion on the 8th of November 1916 and left Sydney on board HMAT A72 "Beltana" on the 25th of November 1916 and disembarked at Devonport on the 29th of January 1917. John was admitted to the Military Hospital at Fovant, from Larks Hill Camp suffering from (Bronchitis) on the 3rd of February 1917. He returned to Larks Hill on the 3rd of March and was moved to Durrington Camp before embarking from Southampton for France on the 19th of June 1917.

John was taken on strength in France on the 10th of July and was Wounded in Action. 1st Occassion on the 13th of October 1917 at Passchendeale, receiving a Gun-Shot Wound to the left Leg. He was admitted to the 16th General Hospital at Asprington before proceeding overseas to England. John rejoined the 33rd Battalion on the 14th of February 1918 and was Wounded in Action. 2nd Occassion on the 20th of April 1918 where he was Severly Gassed and was returned to England and admitted to the 2nd Southern General Hospital in Bristol.

John spent an extended period convarlescing in Hospital before returning to active service and was sent back to France and was attatched to the Australian Graves Detatchment on the 9th of June 1919. He has granted leave in Paris on the 21st of June 1919. John was repatriated to Australia on the 17th of November 1919 on board the "Port Denison" and was discharged on the 18th of January 1920. John applied for repatriation benifits on the 12th of January 1960.

John was a single 26 year old Overseer from Darling Street, Bourke, NSW upon enlistment where he lived with his father Robert.

John's British War Medal 65527 and Victory Medal 63166 were acquired from the Medal Collectors Club of Victoria in November 2006 and are now in the collection.
