John Henry Carter enlisted with C Company 33rd Battalion AIF on the 9th of December 1915 and was an
original member of the Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th May 1916 and
disembarked at Devonport, England on the 9th of July 1916, and was marched to the 9th Training
Battalion at the Durrington Army Camp at Larks Hill where he remaind before proceeding overseas
for France via Southampton on the 21st of November.
John remained in France for the next year in the field before being treated by the Australian
Field Ambulance on the 9th of November 1917. He was suffering from Rheumatism
due to his age and after being treated by the 3rd Canadian General Hospital he was sent to
the Divisional Rest Area before returning to England on the 17th of January 1918. After a short stay
in England John was on board HMAT A8 "Osterley" on the 1st of February bound for Capetown where he
disembarked on the 30th of March before returning to Australia on the 15th of April and was discharged
Medically Unfit on the 15th of May 1918.
John was a single 40 year old Labourer from Laidlaw Street, Boggabri, N.S.W. upon enlistment.
George and Mary Elizabeth Carter had 6 children, 5 boys and 1 girl. John Henry Carter born 1875
at Boggabri, N.S.W. Birth Cert:15707/1875 and died in 1922 at Boggabri, N.S.W. Death Cert:14049/1922.
