Died: 22nd July 1917. Killed in Action Messines Ridge, Belgium.
Martin Eckert enlisted with D company, 33rd Battalion AIF on the 24th of January 1916 and
was an original and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th of May 1916 and disembarked
at Devonport, England on the 9th of July 1916. Martin was marched to the 9th Training Battalion
at the Durrington Army Camp at Larks Hill where he remained until he proceeded overseas on the 21st
of November 1916 and was Taken on in Strength in the Field.
Martin remained with the 33rd in the front Lines and in Company billetts for the nest several months
and was Killed in Action on the 22nd of July 1917 at MESSINES
Martin is remembered with honour and is commemerated in perpetuity by the Commonweath War Graves
Commission at the BETHLEEM FARM MILITARY CEMETERY, MESSINES, BELGIUM.
Martin was a Grazier from Barraba, N.S.W. upon enlistment. After Martin was killed during the war
his widow Mary was granted a war pension of 2 pounds per fortnight and her 3 daughter Margaret
Mary received 20 shilling, Anges Honorah received 15 shilling and Catherine May received 10
shilling from the 6th of October 1917.
