Died: 7th June 1917. Killed in Action Messines, Belgium.
Mother: Margaret Hassall. nee: Brand.
John Henry Hassall enlisted with the 33rd Battalion AIF on the 10th of April 1916 and left
Sydney on board HMAT A68 "Anchises" on the 24th of August 1916 and disembarked at Devonport, England
on the 11th of October and was admitted to the Devonport Military Hospital suffering from
Mumps He was discharged from Hospital on the 11th of November and proceeded overseas with
the 33rd Battalion on the 21st of November for France via Southampton.
John was Taken on in Strength in the Field in France and was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 13th
of April 1917 and to Corporal on the 30th of April after Corporal: HARRIS was transfered.
Lance Corporal: 1470 Leslie Roy BELL. was promoted on the 25th of June
to the rank of Corporal after Corporal: 2068 John Henry Hassall was
Killed in Action on the 7th of June 1917. He is remembered with honour and is commemerated
in perpetuity by the Commonweath War Graves Commission at the TORONTO AVENUE CEMETERY, at MESSINES.
John was a single 40 year old Clerk of Petty Sessions from 25 Walker Street, Lavender Bay, North
Sydney, N.S.W. upon enlistment.
Thomas and Margaret Hassell were married in 1868 at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:3559/1868 and
had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. Ida Hassall born 1870 at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:
18225/1870. Ella K Hassall born 1871 at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:18855/1871. Florence
Elizabeth Hassall born 1873 at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:20107/1873. John Henry Hassall
born 1875 at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:21088/1875. Minnie Margaret Hassall born 1878
at Warialda, N.S.W. Birth Cert:23743/1878.
