Died: 12th October 1917. Killed in Action Passchendaele, Belgium.

Clarence Smith Jeffries enlisted with the D Company 34th Battalion AIF on the 1st of
February 1916 and left Sydney on board HMAT A20 "Hororata" on the 2nd of May 1916. Clarence was
the 23 year old Manager of the Survey Department at Abermain Colleries upon his enlistment. Clarence joined the
Militia when aged only 14 years and became a Lieutenant with the (Hunter River) 14th Infantry when
World War 1 broke out. Clarence enlisted with the rank of Lieutenant and was
Wounded in Action from machine gun fire during the battle of Messines on the 9th of
June 1917. Clarence recovered from his injuries and was Promoted to Captain on the 26th of June 1917.
Captain Jeffries was his Company Commander during the second battle of Passchendaele when he was
Killed in Action on the 12th of October 1917.
Clarence is commemerated in perpetuity by the Commonweath War Graves Commission and is buried
at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
