Henry Kitching enlisted with C Company, 33rd Battalion on the 2nd of January 1916 and
was an original member of the Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th
of May 1916.
6th March 1918
2nd Lieutenant; 806 Henry KITCHING. 33rd Battalion AIF. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 30th March, 1918, this Officer was in command of the left flank of the counter attack launched bt the Battalion on the MARCELCAVE-AUBERCOURT line. In face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire he led his platoon forward with great dash. he succeeded in getting the enemy on the run, and although he had only 10 men left and was entirely cut off from both flanks he continued his advance.
He consolidated a strong point about 800 yards East of MARCELCAVE and although there was a gap of over 600 yards on his left and 250 yards on his he remained firm there for over two hours until the right gap was made good. He was wounded in the neck during the advance, but refused to be evacuated until relieved. Throughout he displayed the greatestdetermination, excellent leadership and splendid courage.

Henry was a single 28 year old Farmer from Myall Creek, Delungra, N.S.W upon enlistment. His
father William was his next of kin who lived at Prospect Terrace, Leyland, Lancashire, England.
