33rd BATTALION AIF

Died: 2nd June 1974. Barraba, New South Wales, Australia. Death Cert:49340/1974.

INFORMATION

David Walter Kneller enlisted with the 1st Reinforcements, 33rd Battalion AIF on the 24th of February 1916 and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th of May 1916 and disembarked at Devonport, England on the 9th of September and was marched to the 9th Training Battalion at the Durrington Army Camp at Larks Hill where he remained until the 21st of November when he proceeded overseas for France via Southampton.

David was Taken on Strength in the field with the 33rd in France and remained with the Battalion until he was Wounded in Action; 1st occassion on the 9th of may 1917 where he received a Gun-Shot wond to his face and was treated by the 9th Australian field Ambulance before being evacuated to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. David was soon back on the front line after rejoining his unit on the 31st of May but he again Wounded in Action; 2nd occassion on the 8th of June 1917 where he received a Gun-Shot Wound to the Chest. David was again treated by the 9th Australian Field Ambulance but this time his injuries required him the be evacuated to England on board the Hospital Ship "Peter de Comick" on the 13th of June.

After arriving in England, David was admitted to the 2nd Southern General Hospital at Bristol where he was treated and discharged in September 1917. He was granted a furlo from the 7th of September until the 21st of September when he was ordered to report the No: 2 Command Depot for Guard Duty. For there he reported to the Overseas Training Battalion where he remained until the 1st of May 1918 when he proceeded oveaseas for France from Longbridge, Deverill via Folkstone and rejoined the 33rd Battalion in the field on the 8th of May. David reported to Hospital on the 14th of July and was sent the the Divisional Rest Depot before rejoining his unit on the 21st of September. He was demobilized after the Armistice and retuned to England on the 12th of March 1919 and returned to Australia on board HMAT A30 "Borda" on the 28th ofJune 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on the 12th of August 1919.

Family Information

David was a single 21 year old Horse Breaker from "Burrington Station" Gurley Siding, N.S.W prior to enlistment.

John and Annie Kneller were married in 1887 at Narrabri, N.S.W. Marriage Cert:6166/1887 and had 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. William T Kneller born 1891 at Narrabri, N.S.W. Birth Cert: 24017/1891. Ivy R.E Kneller born 1892 at Narrabri, N.S.W. Birth Cert:24350/1892. David Walter Kneller born 1894 at Narrabri, N.S.W. Birth Cert:23180/1894 and died in 1974 at Barraba, N.S.W. Death Cert:49340/1974.
