Herbert Caldwell Maclean enlisted on the 4th of January 1916 with B Company, 33rd Battalion
AIF. Herbert was a Grazier from Gundamulda, Barraba in New South Wales prior to enlistment.
Herbert's next of kin was his sister Mrs A Mcpherson of Torrie Lodge, Rylstone, New South Wales.
Herbert was an original member of the battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon"
on the 4th of May 1916. He disembarked at Plymoth England and to camp at Salisbury Plains, then
to training at Messing School, Codford. He rejoined his unit on the 25th of September 1917 and
embarked from Southhampton for France on the 21st of November 1916.
Operations France and Flanders from the 23rd of November 1916 near Armentieres. Herbert was severley
Wounded in Action with shrapnel to the right buttox on the 7th of
June 1917 near Messines and was evacualted to England and Admitted to the 1st Southern General
Hospital.Herbert went to the Depot at Weymouth on the 2nd of November 1917. He embarked from
England on the 20th of December 1917 per "Runic" and disembarked in Melbourne, Victoria,
Australia on the 13th of February 1918, from Melbourne he was transported by train to Sydney.
Herbert was discharged on the 9th of August 1918.
Herbert's British War Medal:44496 and Victory Medal:43501 to C.Q.M.SERJ H.C.MACLEAN 33BN AIF were
aquired from I.S.Wright in Febuary 2005 and are now in the collection.
