INFORMATION

Joseph Harold Payten enlisted with C Company 33 Battalion AIF on the 12th November 1915 and was an original member of the Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th May 1916 and disembarked at devonport, England on the 9th of July. Joseph was marched to the 9th Training Battalion at Larks Hill and on the 11th of November Joseph was promoted to Lance Corporal and proceeded overseas for France on the 21st of November 1916.

After arriving in France Joseph was again promoted to Temporary Corporal on the 24th of February after Corporal: 704 Stanley Joseph BARROW was evacuated to England.

DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL

Sergeant: 853 Joseph Harold PAYTEN, 33rd Battalion AIF. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations against enemy positions South of the SOMME on 8th August 1918. With Lance Corporal: 1803 Thomas COX, Sergeant PAYTEN rushed a strong point in ACCROCHE WOOD, killed two of the enemy and captured two machine guns and the garrison of 14. The dence fog made it difficult to maintain direction, but this non-commissioned officer kept his party well in hand an re-orginised small parties who had lost direction.

At RAT WOOD he rushed and captured a machine gun which was holding up the advance. With his party he captured 34 prisioners in this WOOD. He rendered very valuable assistance in the re-organisation of his Company on reaching our final objective and in the consolidation. Throughout the operation Sergeant PAYTEN distinguished himself by his great gallanrty, sound leadership and splendid initiative.

Joseph was promoted to Corporal at Armentieres on the 22nd of August and Sergeant on the 31st of August when Sergeant: 806 Henry KITCHING was promoted to company Sergeant Major. Joseph was Wounded in Action 1st occassion at Villers-Bretonneux when he was Gassed and on the 5th of October he was again Wounded in Action 2nd occassion near the Hindenburg Line when he suffered a Gun Shot Wound to his Rigth Arm and Left Leg and was evacuated to England.

Joseph was treated at the 2nd Western General Hospital at MANCHESTER, England and after recovering from his injuries Joseph was returned to Australia on bord the "city of York the 4th of January 1919 and was discharged from the A.I.F. on the 19th of april 1919.

Joseph Harold Payten was a married 24 year old Labourer from Boston Street, East Moree, N.S.W. upom enlistment.


22nd BATTALION VOLUNTEER DEFENCE CORPS PART TIME

Joseph enlisted on the 19th of March 1942 at Tenterfield, N.S.W. with the 22nd Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps with the rank of private and was discharged on the 29th of September 1945. Joseph stated that he was born in 1894 but be was born in 1892.

Family Information

Joseph William and Lilly Payten were married in 1891 at Sydney, N.S.W. Marriage Cert:1228/1891 and had 1 child. Joseph Harold Payten born 1892 at Dubbo, N.S.W. Birth Cert:12295/1892. Joseph William Payten died in 1949 at Chatswood, N.S.W. Death Cert:25642/1949.
