Edward James Reilly enlisted with B Company 36th Battalion AIF on the 5th of January 1916 and was an original
member of the Battalion. He embarked from Sydney onboard HMAT A72 "Beltana" on the 13th May 1916.
22/07/1918.
Private: 546A Edward James REILLY. 33rd Battalion AIF. For conspicuous gallantry at SAILLEY-LAURETTE
on the 25th July 1918, during an enemy raid on our posts. Private REILLY was in charge of a Lewis-Gun Section. He
fired a magazine at a party of 20 germans who were attempting to attack his post from the rear, and forced them to take cover
in a sunken road. After killing a German with his revolver he threw twelve bombs and caused to enemy to retire in disorder,
leaving three dead and one wounded. By his remarkable coolness and courage this man was largely responsible for the successful
repulse of the enemy.

Edward returned to Australia on the 11th May 1919.
Edward was a single 21 year old Grocer from 'Broadway', Junee, N.S.W. upon enlistment. His parents Edward and Sarah Reilly
were married in 1891 at Tumut, N.S.W. Marriage Cert:7667/1891 and had 5 children. Margaret E Reilly born 1892 at Tumut, N.S.W.
