INFORMATION

Charles Alexander Summerrell enlisted with the 8th Reinforcements, 33rd Battalion AIF on the 5th of June 1917 and left Sydney on board HMAT A16 "Port Melbourne" on the 6th of July 1917 and disembarked at Liverpool, England on the 16th of September and was marched to the 9th Training Battalion before proceeding overseas for France via Southampton on the 17th of January 1918.

Charles was marched to the front line and Taken on in Strenght in the field on the 20th of January but only saw action for the next 2 months as he was Wounded in Action during the first battle of VILLERS-BRETONNEUX on the 4th of April where he received a number of Severe Gun-Shot Wounds to his Chest and Right Forearm and received treatment by the 9th Australian Field Ambulance.

The Strength of the 9th Infantry Brigade was about 2,250 but their casulties during the 2 days of fighting numbered 30 Officers and 635 men either killed in action or missing.

Charles was transfered to the No: 4 Casualty Clearing Station and was evacuated to England on the 10th of April and admitted to the Bath War Hospital with Severe Gun-Shot Wounds and remaind there for the next 2 months before he was discharged to the No: 3 Command Depot on the 17th of June 1918. He was later transfered to the No: 1 Command Depot at Sutton Venny on the 13th of September and then to the Overseas Training Depot on the 26th of November. Charles left England on board HMAT "Orsova" on the 8th of January 1919 and disembarked in Melbourne, Australia on the 20th of February and proceeded to Sydney and was discharged Medically Unfit on the 5th of June 1919.

Charles's Victory Medal:71904 to PTE: 3379 C SUMMERRELL 33BN AIF was acquired in January 2008 and is now in the collection.

Family Information

Charles was a single 39 year old Brick Maker from Camperdown upon enlistment.
