George Andrew Werner enlisted with Headquarter Company 33rd Battalion AIF with the rank
of Private but was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Shoemaker on the 12th of January 1916 and was
an original member of the Battalion and left Sydney on board HMAT A74 "Marathon" on the 4th of
May 1916 and Died of Wounds in France on the 31st of March 1918.
No: 1510 CSM. Geo. Andrew WERNER. 33rd Bn, AIF. For conspicuous gallantry
and devotion to duty on the 12th October 1917 near PASSCHENDAELE. This W.O. went forward of our
lines in search of wounded, working over marshy ground and under heavy shell fire, he brought in
two wounded men.
His Company suffered heavy casualties and had only one Officer left. He was chiefly responsible
for the radid and efficient organisation of his Company. He did excellent work in consolidating
the new line.
Throughout the operation he displayed great courage, coolness and determination. Although the
conditions was very adverse he maintained a most cheerful and optomistic attitude and set an
excellent example to his men.

George was a single 22 year old Farm Labourer from Swan Peak via Elsmore, Inverell, N.S.W. upon
enlistment. He was a Shoe maker by trade and worked at the Boot Factory at Tenterfield for 2
years. His parents lived at Lawrence Street, Inverell on the 28th March 1922. his mother may have
been a Nurse. There was a communication from Nurse Werner on the 3rd of February 1919. George
served with the Senior Cadets for 4 years prior to World War 1.
Richard and Jean Werner were married in 1888 at Tenterfield, N.S.W. Marriage Cert:7393/1888.
They had no children as indicated by N.S.W. Records. George Andrew Werner was born in 1894
at Tenterfield, N.S.W Birth Cert:33347/1894 to Herman and Jane Werner of Tenterfield, N.S.W.
Jane Werner Died in 1911 at Penrith, N.S.W. Death Cert:`11696/1911. Richard and Jean may
have raised or adopted George. Jean Werner Died in 1929 at Tenterfield, N.S.W. Death Cert:
3908/1929.
